Fuse boxes, alarm panels, telephone cabinets, electricity meters, intercoms, and other mysterious equipment are connected throughout the landscape in a sprawling root system of conduits, cables, and pipes. They communicate and conspire, subconsciously monitoring conditions, exchanging unknown signals and the pure emotional hum of electric power fields. Yet most people pass by them without a second glance or thought. Jeff Mann's electronic installation »Subnet« augments these modest wonders with microcontrollers, sensors, household bric-a-brac, enigmatic mechanisms, and strange sounds, and brings to light the mysterious and enchanted life-energy of this technological ecosystem.

Workshop is taking place on Saturday, Oct 27th, 1.00 till 7.00 p.m., Große Halle

Today, tens of billions of tiny electronic processors permeate our reality, embedded in phones, watches, appliances, toys, cars, factory equipment, and our entire technological infrastructure. In this workshop, we'll look at the microcontroller - the basic element of this distributed network of intelligent objects. These "computers on a chip" are small, inexpensive, simple, and unlike their desktop/laptop cousins, are designed for interaction with the physical world. How can creative individuals use microcontrollers to produce evocative, compelling objects and experiences that go beyond typical mass-produced consumer products? We'll look at examples and discuss how artists have incorporated embedded intelligence into sculpture, installation, and performance. We'll compare various microcontroller systems, and using the open-source "Arduino" platform, we'll experiment with building activated objects that include sensors, processing, and movement. We'll also look at using the microcontroller as a physical interface for audio/video environments like Pure Data, and for remote interaction over the Internet.

During the Transmediale, I’m having an open studio - Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, from 6pm - 11pm. Drop by, hang out, chat, and see some of the work-in-progress. My residency continues until the end of March.

I’m doing control software in Max/MSP/SoftVNS, and using my own custom electronics interface boards for sensors and servo motors. In the different rooms you will find: a table you can draw on with chalk, where your gestures will affect a video/sound projection; a clock whose ticking changes speed as you move around the room; a small room full of skinless mechanical cats; a dark room that responds to the light of a pocket lamp with sounds and robotic movement; and various other delights... The work is commissioned by the Internationale Heiner Müller Gesellschaft, and will be installed in an apartment building in Berlin in February.
